Stump Grinding in Springfield, OH

Once a tree is cut down, the stump left behind sits in the ground and causes problems for years — it gets in the way of mowing, it attracts carpenter ants and other wood-boring insects, and it can be a tripping hazard. Grinding it down below the soil surface solves all of that and lets you fill the area and reseed it.

  • You had a tree removed and the stump is sitting in the middle of the yard
  • You're mowing around a stump every week and tired of dealing with it
  • You want to reseed or replant the area where a tree used to be
  • The stump is close to the house and carpenter ants have moved into it
  • You're installing a fence, patio, or addition and the stump is in the way

How It Works

Our Process for Stump Grinding

  1. 1

    Check for obstacles

Before the grinder goes anywhere near the stump, we check for buried utilities, irrigation lines, and anything else close to the surface. Call 811 before you dig is the rule. We follow it.

  2. 2

    Position the grinder

The machine needs a clear path to the stump. We look at access — gate width, slope, and what's nearby — before we start. Some yards need a smaller unit to get through.

  3. 3

    Grind below grade

We grind the stump down six to eight inches below ground level. That's enough depth to fill and reseed over. We go deeper if the area is going under a patio or structure.

  4. 4

    Deal with the chips

Grinding produces a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. We can leave them for you to use as mulch, or we haul them away. You decide when we get there.

  5. 5

    Backfill the void

The hole left after grinding can be backfilled with the chips and topsoil, or you can bring in clean fill. We'll tell you what we'd recommend based on what you're planning to do with the area.

What's included

  • Grinding the stump down to at least six inches below ground level
  • One access assessment before the machine moves to confirm safe approach
  • Option to leave wood chips on site or have them hauled away
  • Basic leveling of the grindings and surrounding disturbed soil
  • Honest guidance on whether the area is ready to reseed or needs more fill

What's not included

  • Removal of surface roots extending away from the stump — those are extra
  • Delivery and installation of topsoil or grass seed — that is separate
  • Grinding stumps with metal embedded in them, like old fence posts or hardware

Real Situations

Common Scenarios in Springfield

A homeowner in Springfield had a large silver maple taken down last fall and the stump has been sitting in the front yard through winter.

We grind it down below grade, level the chips back into the void, and leave the area ready to top-dress with soil and seed in the spring. The front yard stops looking like a job half done.

A homeowner wants to extend their backyard patio over the area where a tree was removed, but the stump is right in the footprint.

For anything going under a hard surface, we grind deeper than the standard depth to make sure there's no wood left to decay and create a void under the slab. We discuss that during the estimate so the extra depth is priced in from the start.

A homeowner has two stumps from ash trees removed two years ago and both are now sprouting shoots from the base every spring.

Sprouting from a live root system is common with certain species. Grinding removes the stump and disrupts enough of the root mass close to the surface that most stumps stop sending up shoots. We won't promise every root stops, but grinding resolves it in the large majority of cases.

Springfield Context

Why this matters in Springfield

Springfield yards have a lot of ash stumps left from removals done in the last decade as emerald ash borer moved through Clark County. Those stumps tend to be wide and have extensive surface root systems. Many of them are in established neighborhoods with older homes and tight backyards, which affects what equipment we can get back there and how the job gets priced.

Straight Talk

About pricing & scope

Price depends on the diameter of the stump, how many there are, and how easy the access is. A large stump against a fence or on a slope with no gate access takes more time and setup than an open-yard stump. Surface roots that run out several feet from the base can also add time if you want those ground out too.
